WORKSHOP CAST LIST

Congratulations to you all!
We are so happy to have you all in the workshop this spring—it promises to be a truly unique, BUSY, fun-filled session!
Please remember the following as you read the casting:

We respect and value you all.
You are all talented.

That being said, though I am sure you read the On Casting Letter or even the Parent Letter, I will remind you to look at the casting through our eyes and realize what a tough job we had to do. There are 50 of you—isn’t that wonderful! Fifty talented actors whom we placed in FIVE shows in order to ENSURE that you would all be challenged and have a lot to do—that you will all SHINE. No other youth theatre organization would do that. They would stick you in THREE shows and be done with it. WE ARE CRAZY. But, we adore you all, and your process means so much to us, that we make choices like adding a fifth show to make sure that you all have a very specific artistic place in which to learn and grow. While casting we looked at the following:
1. Your talent and how well you prepared for your audition.
2. Your conflicts…and OFTEN, your conflicts dictated that you be in a show, when your talent may have tipped you to a different role and show.
3. The requirements of the shows.
4. The fact that we have 6 seniors graduating this spring is also a factor we consider.
5. How we can challenge you—what is best for each of you as well as what is best for the shows.
Many of you could have been cast in multiple shows without a problem. Your conflicts and the conflicts of others often dictate in which show you land.
6. Lastly, because of the copious conflicts in the teen cast, we even had to search out alternate rehearsal space as we ended up having to rehearse on the same day. We had to do this in order to keep you all in the program and to challenge you with these shows.

We worked until after 1:00am trying to make the casting work so that all the directors were happy. This is not an easy process. We want you to be happy…well, Adam doesn’t particularly care if you are happy, but the rest of us do. If you are happy, great! If you aren’t happy, I am so sorry. I hope that part of your challenge will be about how to make the experience a great one, remembering that sometimes getting what you didn’t expect or want can be better than getting what you hoped for—open your minds and hearts and TAKE A RISK.
I dare you all to be unselfish and to help someone else enjoy their process. Please include everyone and make sure that your entire cast feels welcome and at home in the group.

REHEARSAL LOCATIONS:

Rehearsals for the two TEEN musicals will take place at LVP and at the Historic Bowling Alley. We will alternate. A schedule will be coming soon, as will a weekend rehearsal schedule.
This is a great space to work in. We will also have use of the Butterfield/Schiffman dining room to work in should we need it. Please dress warmly. We will have heaters on when we are in the bowling alley, but it can be drafty. We may also have use of large spaces in other homes as well. We have to split spaces in order to accommodate the hectic schedules of the teens. Bear with us as we work this system out.

The Play and both Tween shows will rehearse at LVP.

Parents, we will be emailing you the Parent Meeting Schedule, which is essentially the last 30 minutes of each rehearsal this week. Let us know if you CANNOT make a meeting and we will have a board member contact you! We have a lot of NEW info to impart and want to make sure that new LVP families as well as the veteran LVP families are all up to date in how LVP will be working this season!

Now, we all have a lot of work to do. Whatever role you have, in whatever show, it’s your job to create it with truth and fun and to make it memorable for yourself, and for the audience! You really must as there is no one else to do it for you…these are such small casts, each one of you is essential!

“Anything you do, let it come from you. Then it will be new.”

Bravo to you all!

Stephanie Kovacs Cohen
Artistic Director

**All actors should come to his/her first rehearsal with a pencil, a highlighter, an open mind and a generous spirit!

**You must fill out an online registration form, if you have not already done so. Please do that immediately as we are beginning rehearsals this week.

We are so excited to begin work THIS WEEK on the following shows:

The People Garden

by Paul Armento

Director: Stephanie Kovacs Cohen
Musical Director: Adam Cohen
Teen Assistant Director: Jordyn Kaufman
Meets Tuesdays 3:30pm-5:30pm
The performances will be the weekend on June 2nd and 3rd.

The People Garden is a musical we have wanted to do for YEARS! We are excited to be able to work on it now! This is an eleven-person cast, so everyone will have a lot to do! It takes place in a kindergarten classroom whose teacher has left to have a baby. The kids get a substitute teacher who faces her own challenges in teaching young children. This piece really focuses on character and how the actors relate to one another. Ten of them must realistically play kindergarten-aged kids. One actor must realistically play a young adult teacher. No mocking, no “playing at,” but TRUTHFULLY portraying the characters and what they are going through. We find through the show, that their emotional situations are simply human and not based on age. This will be lots of fun with a lot to do for everyone involved! You might want to bring a recording device to record your music so you can practice at home.

There is going to be a lot for every actor to do, from monologues to scene work to musical numbers. The actors will each play at least one toy in human form, and bring the world of toys to life!

Little Shop of Horrors

By Howard Ashman & Alan Menken
Director: Galit Sperling
Musical Director: Amy Schiff
Choreographer: Jocelyn Jones
Meets Wednesdays 5:15pm-9:15pm
The performances will be on May 26th and 27th.

We are looking forward to producing Little Shop this semester at LVP! While this is going to be a very fun show to do, there will be no caricatures in our production. Every character is a fully-fleshed out person, and we will be doing a lot of acting work on intention and objective. We want to convey an authentic sense of the place these characters live in. Skid Row is dark and gritty, and each character is doing what they have to to survive. This is an exciting and well-written show, and we are excited to do it justice with these fabulous actors!

Once on this Island

Book and Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens
Music by Stephen Flaherty
Based upon the novel, “My Love, My Love” By Rosa Guy
Director: Stephanie Kovacs Cohen
Musical Director: by Marcus Baker
Choreographer: Jocelyn Jones
Rehearses on Wednesdays from 5:15-9:15pm at LVP and at the Historic Bowling Alley.
The performances will be on May 26th & 27th.

Once on this Island is a gorgeous musical about two people finding forbidden love and doing whatever they can to protect their love in spite of the meddling of four charismatic Gods. This cast has ten…yes, TEN people cast in it. This show is usually cast with double this number in order to have a chorus. We are ensuring that this cast of ten has a TON to do. You are all taken care of, believe me. This show is largely sung through, which means a lot of singing, dancing and musical staging. Please wear dance appropriate clothing and shoes to EVERY REHEARSAL. Please bring a recording device to record your musical parts. This show captures the hearts of audiences and the people who work on it…it just does. It will be fun and I think it will fill up our hearts—it’s that kind of feel-good show—even with the meaty, awesome disaster that awaits the characters…tantalized? You will love it.

Top Girls

By Caryl Churchill
Director: Stephanie Kovacs Cohen Rehearses on Mondays from 5:15-9:15pm at LVP
The performances will be on June 2nd and 3rd.

Top Girls is a wild, unique, funny, daring, challenging play with seven actors. We will be doing it with six young women and a cameo part yet to be cast. This piece is essentially a feminist piece marking the strength of women through history and the sometimes impossible choices we’ve had to make in order to survive and be happy in what used to be (and sometimes still can be) a “man’s” world. This play has adult content and language and tons of lines that you should really start memorizing NOW, even though you don’t yet have scripts. We are going to have a blast.
